Home Office & Study Feng Shui
Working or studying from home? Where you put the desk shapes focus and calm. The feng shui command position, and the practical reasons it works.
With more people working and studying from home, the desk has become one of the most asked-about spots in the house. Feng shui has a clear and genuinely useful idea here — the command position — and most of its advice doubles as good advice for concentration. Here is how I set it out for clients.
The command position
The central principle is to place your desk in the command position: seated, you can see the room’s door, but you are not sitting directly in its path. Tradition says this puts you ‘in command’ of your space and your work. The everyday reason is just as strong — facing the door, you are not startled by people entering, so you feel settled and focus better.
Support behind, open space ahead
- Solid wall behind the chair for a sense of backing and security — avoid sitting with your back to a door or large window.
- Open space or a pleasant view ahead, not your nose to a blank wall in a cramped corner.
- Avoid a heavy beam directly overhead, traditionally felt as pressure; shift the desk or use a false ceiling.
- Keep the desk out of the direct line of the door’s ‘rush’ if the room allows.
Light, order and the five elements
A productive study is well-lit, tidy and calm. Good natural light during the day and a proper task lamp support focus; clutter is the enemy of both feng shui and concentration. A few touches align with tradition: a healthy plant for growth (wood), warm but not harsh lighting, and natural materials like wood for a grounded, steady feel.

Frequently asked questions
What is the command position for a desk?
It means placing your desk so that, seated, you can see the room’s door without sitting directly in line with it, ideally with a solid wall behind you. Tradition links it to being in command; practically, it helps you feel settled and focus.
Why shouldn’t I sit with my back to the door?
Tradition reads it as a lack of support and awareness. The plain reason is that being startled by people entering behind you breaks concentration and comfort, so facing the door helps you work better.
How can I improve a home study with feng shui?
Use the command position, keep a solid wall behind you, ensure good light and order, avoid a heavy beam overhead, and add a healthy plant and natural materials. Most of this doubles as good advice for concentration.
