The Complete Moving House Checklist

Moving is mostly logistics, not luck. With a clear week-by-week checklist, the chaos of moving day in Malaysia becomes a series of small, done-and-dusted tasks.

⚡ Quick answer: Start four to six weeks out. Line up utilities (transfer or open TNB electricity, SYABAS/Air water, and internet), redirect your mail, pack room by room with labelled boxes, carry valuables yourself, and keep a "first-night" bag so night one is comfortable.

Every move looks overwhelming until you break it into stages. Below is the checklist I share with clients collecting keys to a new home — from the utilities most people forget to the box that saves your first night.

Four to six weeks before

The early weeks are for admin, not boxes. Sort these while you have time and you avoid a last-minute scramble.

  • Book your movers early, especially around month-end and public holidays when they fill up fast.
  • Declutter before you pack — donate, sell or dispose of what you will not carry. You pay to move everything, so move less.
  • Update your address: bank, insurance, JPJ/road tax, employer, online shopping accounts and any subscriptions.
  • Arrange a mail redirection so letters to your old address still reach you.

Utilities and accounts

Getting services live on day one is the difference between a smooth move and a dark, water-less first night. Handle these before you hand over the old place.

ServiceWhat to do
Electricity (TNB)Transfer the account to your name, or open a new one for the new address; settle the final bill at the old home.
Water (SYABAS / state water)Open or transfer the supply account; note the meter reading on move-out.
Internet & TVBook relocation or a fresh installation early — fibre slots can take days to weeks.
Gas / cylinderArrange piped-gas transfer, or order a fresh LPG cylinder for the new kitchen.
Management / maintenanceFor strata homes, register with the JMB/management office and collect access cards.

Pack room by room

Packing by room keeps unpacking sane. Label every box with its room and a one-line list of contents, and number them so you know if one goes missing.

  • Pack a clearly marked "first-night" box: bedsheets, towels, toiletries, phone chargers, a kettle, basic cutlery and medication.
  • Keep documents, keys, jewellery and electronics with you, not on the lorry.
  • Wrap fragile items in towels and clothes — free padding you are moving anyway.
  • Photograph the back of your TV and router connections before unplugging.
Insure what matters. For valuable or long-distance moves, check whether your mover offers transit coverage, and carry irreplaceable items personally. A dropped box is cheaper to prevent than to argue over.

Moving day and the first week

On the day, do a final walk-through of the old home — cupboards, water heater, meter readings and every switched-off main. At the new place, test the locks, check the water and power, and change or re-key external locks if previous occupants may still hold keys.

  • Confirm all boxes arrived against your numbered list.
  • Set up beds and the bathroom first — rest matters more than a perfect living room.
  • Find the main water valve, the DB box (trip switches) and the stop tap so you are ready for any surprise.
  • Say hello to the neighbours; in gated communities, register your vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I start planning a move?

Four to six weeks is comfortable. Book movers and sort utilities and address changes first, then pack in the final two weeks.

Should I transfer or open a new TNB account?

Either works — transfer the existing account to your name, or open a fresh one for the new address. Settle the old home’s final bill so it is not held against your deposit.

What should go in a first-night box?

Bedsheets, towels, toiletries, chargers, a kettle, some cutlery and any medication — everything you need before you unpack a single other box.
